REO stands for Real Estate Owned and is actually bank owned property. After a property fails to sell to bidders at a foreclosure auction it’s taken back by lenders. Lenders aren’t in the real estate business. Their primary goal is to get rid of the property ASAP. That means they typically sell for below market value leaving profit margin potential open for those who can bring the property to market condition.
